Operator Competency Requirements
The Competency of Operators of Pleasure Craft Regulations require that all operators of pleasure craft fitted with a motor have proof of competency and proof of age on board at all times.
The Regulations are being phased in as follows:
 | All operators born after April 1, 1983 are required to have proof of competency since 1999. |
| As of September 15, 2002, all operators of craft of less than 4 m (13'1") in length, including personal watercraft, will be required to have proof of competency. |
| As of September 15, 2009, all operators will be required to have proof of competency. |
The MLA is offering 2 styles of courses:
1. On Water Driver Training - this class will
have you at the helm of your own boat.
It is not a "Rules of the Road" course.
Whether you have been driving a boat for
years, or are a relatively new boater, this
course will dramatically increase your boat
handling skills. If you do not have your PCOC
you will get it as well. This course if available
on July 25 or 26. The class runs from 10 am to
4 pm is is $169.
2. Junior Boating Courses - This course is
designed for 8-12 year olds (children over 12
must take the adult course) and will teach the
basics involved as well as the "Rules of the
Road". At the end of the course, students who
pass will receive their PCOC card, which is
good for life. This course has been booked
for July 21 or 23 and August 11 or 13. The cost
of the course is $55 per student and is held at
the MLA office in Port Carling from 9:30 am to
Noon.
